The Story: October 18th 2007, 2.08pm. Distress calls are received at Heathrow Airport from an inbound 'Boeing 747' from Florida. The pilot, three crew and twelve passengers have been struck down by a mystery illness. By the time the plane lands, 7 people are dead. Only one man, an American citizen named Cameron Francis, disembarks the aircraft without showing any symptoms of the deadly bug. • Someone is asked to separate a mixed deck into black cards and reds, dealing the cards face up—but with his eyes closed. When he opens them, he sees what everyone else has been watching: the piles he has created are a random jumble of colors and he has utterly failed. Or has he? The performer reveals that he has assembled the cards from two decks—and his helper has somehow perfectly separated the cards by their different back patterns!

• Two spectators are each asked to think of a card as the performer spreads through the deck. The cards are shuffled and held behind the performerís back. As he brings out one card at a time, one of the spectators silently spells the name of the card he thought of and slaps his hand down on the card dealt as the last letter of its name. When he turns it up, it is his mental selection! The cards are shuffled further and the second spectator pushes a cocktail sword anywhere into the deck, only to find it lodged exactly where his thought-of card lies!

• Anyone shuffles the deck, cuts it in half and gives one half to the performer. Both of them look through their cards and think of one. The performer shows his selection to someone else to keep things fair. He then deals the top card of his packet face down onto the table, after which the spectator deals his top card face up. They continue to deal cards, the performer always preceding the spectator. When the spectator deals his thought-of card face up, he announces it. The other spectator names the performerís card and, when the top card of his dealt pile is turned up—this card having been dealt just before the spectator dealt his—it is the performer's!

• The performer spreads through a face-up deck, showing it to be in completely random order. Then, without a suspicious move, he widely spreads the deck on the table, showing that the black cards have suddenly separated from the reds!

Luckily there is one card in the deck that carries his own sword, the King of Clubs. After the King of Clubs has been thoroughly examined, it is pushed half way into the deck, when it emerges one of the selected cards is now impossibly impaled on the king’s sword...and it’s part of the actual printing on the card...this is impossible! If that wasn't enough, without any switches, the same card is pushed into the pack again and impossibly, the second selection is now impaled on the King's other sword...the cards just seem to materialize on the swords...it's crazy visual magic!

Effect: A bill is borrowed and signed by the spectator. The performer then completely vanishes the bill. The performer then points out a tin of mints that has been in view throughout. The spectator tips out the contents. Inside is a box of ‘Tic Tac’ breath mints but instead of mints a folded bill can be clearly seen. The lid is popped off the box and the bill is tipped out onto the spectators hand. They actually see it come from the box which is now genuinely empty. It was nice to see someone using a Tiger deck. Hopefully, people will realize that this is just another deck of cards and that when you present your magic as just a regular deck with different colors, then the audience fully accepts it. I know that those of us who know this already and practice it enjoy hearing spectators make positive comments about you using an unusual deck and how it separates you from the rest of the pack.

Every trick plays really well to the audience and it’s easy to see that this stuff work extremely well in pretty much everyone’s act. This is visual magic that audiences love. Even if it’s only a single trick that you like, it’ll be well worth it because you’ll love that trick.

Virtually everything said by Nate is purely instructional (take a card, put it back in the deck, etc). The up side to this is that it will force people to create their own presentations for the tricks. I’m curious to see where people’s ideas go from here.

The tricks definitely have potential to get some great reactions. Like with any magic trick, it all depends on who is doing the trick and what is done with it. The material can be performed by anyone, but showmanship is definitely going to be required.

Nate's tips on Loops are sound and will help even the seasoned "loop worker." The teaching is complete and Nate covers everything that you need to know to perform the tricks properly and easily. In addition to the methods, Nate covers performance advice based off of real-world experience. This is very nice, as Nate actually goes through things that will help you in just about any performance venue.

The presentations here were also like the other two. This DVD set will give you all the technical aspects of the tricks, but you will need to create your own presentations. Some of the material here will allow for some emotionally-driven presentations, so I hope they are filmed and posted in the Member Videos forum.

The material here is very original and definitely would play well to any audience. Life is a beautiful piece of magic that really can become something that people will remember forever. The other material is unique and can instantly go into the performance repertoire of virtually every magician who uses Loops.

Daniel's teaching is exactly what you'd expect - thorough without being boring. He covers everything you need to know to perform the trick, the tips are designed to help you when performing for real audiences in real situations, and he does it all without being boring or cheesy. It's nice to see that his performing style matches his teaching style. Some of this material might require you to watch the video a few times to learn, but you will get it. Patience is your friend.

The tips here are just as valuable as those in the other videos. Daniel offers tips and advice that comes into play for virtually every performer. It's clear that he has been out performing with Loops in all the situations that you could imagine. This advice will help you perform the tricks in real-world performance situations and allow you to be successful. The best part about these tips (and the tips in the other two videos) is that you get to listen and learn to those who have the real-world experience. Remember that these guys learned most of these lessons the hard way. They are passing this information onto you so you can become more successful and at a faster rate.

For the price, it's easy to say “Yes!” to all three volumes. Loops are dear to my heart and I was very excited to hear about this project. Now that I have seen the "final result," I believe that Loops have been taken to a new level. There is some very powerful magic taught in this DVD set and the tips will allow the students to use the magic on a regular basis. Fortunately, the material will not take you years or months to master. I feel that it's possible to learn every piece in the DVD set in a month or so, provided you have regular practice and study on it.

Again, it is nice to see a Viper deck being used and being accepted by the audience. I have always been a firm believer that the only people who have audiences "question" their Tiger/Viper/Ghost/whatever decks are not presenting the deck itself properly and blaming the prop. I present a Masters deck in the exact same fashion that I would present a Tiger deck to ensure the audience knows the deck itself is fine. Far too many magicians just assume that because the audience did not openly question the deck, then they believe it is not gimmicked.

I remember seeing Justin performing some of this material for real audiences when he visited Vancouver last summer. I can personally say that this material obtained stunning reactions on a consistent basis, from a variety of spectators. His haunted pack where the selected card turns itself over for the reveal is one of the nicest things that I have seen accomplished with a Loop.

Again, we only see patter that is technical explanations required to accomplish the trick (pick a card, watch the fork, etc). However, this is something that I prefer, as it forces us (as magicians) to create our own presentations. Since some of the tricks have multiple elements, there are lots of presentational options – I love that freedom.

Justin's teaching is complete and easy to follow. Some of the tricks have a bit of process to them, but Justin covers everything so nicely that you can quickly learn each one. Some of the methods are unlike anything I have ever seen with Loops before, and a creative mind can definitely take some of this stuff in other directions to create new tricks. While I already knew all of the methods from previous instruction (I attended Justin’s lecture while he was here in Vancouver), I found myself watching them a few times to pick up the tips more than once.

His real-world tips are phenomenal and should be heard by any magician who is using Loops. You can easily tell that Justin learned a lot of these real-world tips the hard way, like a true worker. I do hope that people listen to the tips a few times and really take them to heart. Justin is providing some valuable information to ensure that you learn the "real-world lessons" the easy way. The hard way usually means having a trick failing in a performance.

This wonderful looking book, a classic of English literature recognized and enjoyed all over the world, can now be a part of your library of specially made books that help you perform wonders for friends, colleagues, or any audience you’re performing for. It can be anyone! Though you can perform with this book on its own, the genius of the gaff enables you to use this book in conjunction with any other book of your choice, gaffed or not!

Here's how it works: the mentalist or magician talks about how Sherlock Holmes was one of the all-time best detectives in history. The performer explains how this Victorian age CSI expert would use his five senses to discover clues and induce facts that would ultimately lead him to solve crimes that stumped the famous Scotland Yard and stopped them dead in their tracks.

This person is then asked to look through the book and tell the audience how many pages there are. With nearly 300 pages to choose from, this participant is asked to choose one at random and WITHOUT LOOKING. It is a totally free choice!

The number is then revealed to the audience and the person is applauded back to their seat. Another person is then freely chosen from the audience and asked to pick up any other book sitting on a table.

There can be one or 30 books; it doesn't matter. They can even change their mind and pick up another book. No problem! This second person is instructed to turn to the page number previously chosen at random and to being reading the page in their mind as if they were projecting it to you.

IMMEDIATELY you reveal the first word as they are getting through the first paragraph. You then being to reveal the contents of the whole first paragraph!

She is instructed to continue reading in her head. But you are able to piece things together just like Sherlock Holmes but even better. You are able to tell her about the whole page! You "see" what she is reading.

Effect: A deck of cards is removed from its case and handed to the spectator for shuffling. It is a genuine, unmarked deck – not gimmicked in any way. The spectator shuffles the cards until he is satisfied and then holds on to them – the performer doesn’t touch them again. Drawing attention to the card case, the performer fairly shows it on all sides pointing out that there are clearly no slits or holes to be found anywhere. You turn your back and instruct the spectator to spread the cards face down, push any card from the spread and without looking at it, seal it in the card case. The rest of the deck is then hidden from view and the performer turns back round and begins to concentrate intensely, focusing all his energy on the card case. Bit by bit, he begins to reveal the unknown card. First the colour….black. Then the suit….a Club. And finally, the value….a King, it’s the King of Clubs! The spectator is asked to remove the card from the case and sure enough the card inside is none other than the King of Clubs!

The above is merely an example of what is possible with the devious gimmick described within. ‘The Second Guest’ uses a 100% regular deck that is genuinely shuffled in any fashion by the spectator. No marked cards. No prior set up of the deck. Completely free choice of card which will be different every time. Can be performed at any point in your set – not strictly an opener or closer.

You’ll love the action of the ‘auto-gimmick’ that hides in plain sight until you activate it through the simplest of actions and proceed to devastate the onlookers with your amazing powers of second sight!
