Described by critic Edmund Wilson as "a topnotch magician-and one of the world's leading authorities on professional magic," John Mulholland was not only one of the most brilliant magicians of the 20th century, but at the time this book was first published, he was the only magician to be listed in Who's Who in America. In this classic guide, he reveals many of his best-kept secrets, explaining what magic is and why it works, offering practical tips on practicing and how to avoid errors and stage fright. At the heart of the text are detailed, easy-to-follow instructions for performing scores of tricks. Would-be magicians will soon be astounding friends, family and even large audiences with such card tricks as The Hungry Jackass-a feat that makes use of any easy memory device; seemingly extemporaneous tricks such as The Bread Winner, in which a coin vanishes and reappears inside a roll; tricks especially created to entertain youngsters; magical thought transference and other intriguing stunts such as Beelzebub's Letter, in which a letter mailed yesterday contains a coin borrowed today!None of these tricks require sleight-of-hand; but you will need such common objects as a deck of cards coins, rings and string, paper napkins, matches and a dollar bill. Practitioners will find they can master some feats in just a few minutes after reading the instructions. Other tricks can be learned in an hour, or at most, after a few hours of practice. Paperbound, 352 5 3/8" by 8 1/2" pages, 72 illustrations.

Why do card tricks work? How can magicians do astonishing feats of mathematics mentally? Why do stage "mind-reading" tricks work? As a rule we simply accept these tricks as "magic," we seldom recognize that they are really demonstrations of strict laws based on probability, sets, theory of numbers, topology and other branches of mathematics. This is the first book-length study of this fascinating branch of recreational mathematics. Written by one of the foremost experts on mathematical magic, it summarizes, with considerable historical data and bibliography, all previous work in this field; it is also a creative examination of laws and their exemplification, with scores of new tricks, new insights and new demonstrations. In this volume, for the first time, dozens of topological tricks are explained and dozens of manipulation tricks are aligned with mathematical law.Non-technical, detailed and clear, this volume contains 115 sections discussing tricks with cards, dice, coins, etc.; topological tricks with handkerchiefs, cards, etc.; geometrical vanishing effects; demonstrations with pure numbers; and dozens of other topics. You will learn how a Moebius strip works, how a Curry square can "prove" that the whole is not equal to the sum of its parts and lots more. No skill at sleight-of-hand is needed to perform the more than 500 tricks described. Mathematics guarantees their success, they will work for anyone. Mathematics Magic and Mystery includes detailed examinations of laws and their application permits you to create your own problems and effects.Paperbound, 174 5 3/8" by 8" pages, 135 illustrations.

This is Gold Cups Winner Steve Bedwell's favorite stand up magic routine! A lady from the audience is invited on stage to observe the magician as he cuts a length of rope in half and then restores it. The effect is repeated several times to the increasing bewilderment of the assisting spectator. However, unknown to the spectator, the rest of the audience sees the magician secretly transfer short pieces of rope into and out of play in Balls Over The Head fashion. The trick builds into a crescendo of craziness culminating in a hilarious visual restoration of the rope!

Inner-More Inner and Further Inner Secrets of Card Magic make up the finest-ever collection of top-quality tricks and sleights. Get them on your shelf and you'll be set for life...for this type of material will be fresh in 50 years time." -Harry Stanley, The Gen January 1969Perhaps Hofzinser said it best, "card effects are the poetry of conjuring." If that is so, Dai Vernon was a master poet. Beginning at the tender age of five, David Frederick Wingfield Verner passionately embraced the art of magic with all his heart and soul-he never let go. Nothing got between him and his lifelong quest for perfection at his craft. His well-grounded knowledge of the principles of conjuring and his skillful knack for expanding upon those principles gained him world-wide admiration. His many innovations have become "the stuff that dreams are made of." Magicians respected him because he respected magic. It is well documented that he had a profound influence on his contemporaries as well as on the subsequent "new wave" of close-up practitioners that faithfully followed his teachings.Cervon, Jennings, Klause, Skinner, et al, they felt "The Vernon Touch"...they still do...so will you. Thoughtfully pursue the pages of this book with cards in hand and you'll soon realize whey they all lovingly call Dai Vernon, "The Professor."240 pages, hardbound with dustjacket.

The effects in this book have been designed form the inside out. In each case, Christopher began with some concept drawn from nature or metaphysics that he was strongly attached to. Then, like a magnet invisibly organizing iron filings, the concept acted as a nucleus around which technique, method, and devices gathered to produce the form of the effect. In this manuscript, Christopher applied this empirical perspective to the classic effects of magic and found that many of them expressed principles found in nature or archetypal ideas from the human imagination. This Inside-Out perspective allows the performer to get deep into the heart of an effect, and truly understand it. Once that is achieved the performer can truly amaze the audience with effects that appear to be a natural extension of the performer's mind and body. Inside-Out is certainly not the only perspective that can be applied to finding/creating magic and mental effects. Simply looking or a cool way of showing off one's dexterity with coins or cards can lead to entertaining and recognizable magic. What adopting the Inside-Out perspective can do is add another dimension to our enjoyment of the magic of nature and the nature of magic.Features Included:Introduction: The Inside-Out Perspective.Getting There and the Double-Writing Wallet: Cognitive geography and way findingBeing There, a Special Pen and a Billet Index: An archetypal dream.Three Minds, One Thought and the Thought Recorder Deck: Mental telepathy with a deck of cards.Room 7 and the Pocket Printing Press: Taking an imaginary journey and returning with something real. The Famous author, creator and billet worker, Al Mann said, "You rattled me with your Jagged Edge billet test. It is great and original. I only wish I had it when I wrote The Purloined Thought." Docc Hilford has taken the simplistic course of the Center Tear and given it a new direction. The Jagged Edge allows the Mentalist to know EVERYTHING that is written on a list. Effect Ten people are asked to think of a past president. Each person must think of a different president. To facilitate this, a small pad of paper passed among the participants. Checking to make certain that their chosen president has not been listed, each person writes the name that they have in mind. If the name is already on the list, the participant has to select a different name. When all ten people have chosen a name, a new person looks over the list and circles one name. The written list is no longer needed so one of the spectators removes the sheet and folds it into quarters. The pad is tossed aside. The mentalist tears the folded paper and throws it away; after all, it was needed only to make certain that no names were duplicated. THE MENTALIST IS NOW ABLE TO LOOK AT EACH PERSON ON THE LIST AND REVEAL WHAT NAME THEY HAVE IN MIND! Beyond this remarkable demonstration, the mentalist asks a member of the audience to open a large envelope they have been holding since before the list was made. Inside is a prediction. It reveals that the mentalist knew the name that would be selected by the participant that circled a name! This new billet technique is applicable to endless presentations. In an instant, you will be able to know what was written on the list, who wrote what and which of the list was selected. If you ever wanted to be able to entertain a large group of people with nothing more that a BORROWED piece of paper, now you can.Has these important features: No switching of papers. Only one paper is used. No carbons in the pad, or anywhere else. No peeks, glimpses or quick looks. Any paper will work. Everything can be borrowed. No stolen center. Perfectly logical reason for writing the thoughts. Every move is natural. Entirely new technique. Can be used in an endless number of tricks. Can be learned in a few minutes. Completely one-man. Can be used with a spirit medium act. Instanly gives three pieces of information: Who the 10 of 12 thoughts are, Who wrote what, And which thought was selected.BONUS MATERIAL: In this manuscript, you will receive The Phantom Artist, a clever effect by Percy Naldrett that enables you to reveal a thought through an artistic ability. Published previously, never before has this effect been given such a presentation. An original creation of Docc Hilford for use with The Jagged Edge...

Milton Kort is a legend of sorts: a magician who has seldom traveled outside the Detroit area, who rarely performs at magicians' conventions or lectures, yet a man whom the professionals and greats in magic came to see; men like Paul Rosini, Stewart James, Dr. Daley, J. B. Bobo, Charlie Miller, Cardini, Dai Vernon and many more sought out Milt Kort and shared secrets with him.But why? It was his great love of magic that drew magic's greats to him. Well, there was one other reason. Milt often fooled them with devilishly clever tricks of his own invention. These tricks are in great part what Kort is about. They all fall within the realm of close-up magic, Milt's main love, and they use such mundane items as playing cards, coins, dice, balls, razor blades, eggs, handkerchiefs, pens and toy elephants. What happens with those items, though, is anything but mundane.Using skills and techniques mainly in the range of the average close-up enthusiast, Milt Kort offers 46 of his most baffling and entertaining tricks and routines to his fellow magicians, all based on one simple rule, Kort's First Principle: Have Fun! 376 pages, hardcover, copiously illustrated by Sandy Kort.
This combo book offers two of Jerry's classics in one volume. Kurious Kards is a fascinating exploration into fancy and unusual displays that can be accomplished with a deck of cards: Water Falls, Multiple Water Falls, assorted ribbon spreads and more. This is the material that Jerry performed on the Omni Magazine television program. One can build an entire act around this material, or utilize some of these presentations for magic routines. Jerry lists many ideas for using these displays in magic effects to dramatically reveal a card. (For example, A card is selected, signed and lost in the deck. The magician interweaves the cards and performs an impressive double water fall with the cards with the backs towards the audience. At the sudden finish, the performer is left holding the selected card, face towards the spectators.) As usual, Jerry offers a wealth of tips and ideas in this book.Five Dollar Tricks offers five Andrus routines with dollars (coins and bills). He also explains some coin moves and a single and multiple coin holder. If you have not exploited coin holders, you are missing one of the more useful and powerful accessories in magic. One of the effects in this book is Double Dollars, where a borrowed dollar bill is shown on both sides, then folded into a cone, at which time the magician pours a half dollar (or dollar) coin from it. The bill is unfolded, shown around, then refolded into a cone and another coin is produced. Three coins are produced and the bill is returned to the lender. Between these two books is a wealth of unique Andrus magic knowledge that every lover of magic will find value in.

The lights in the theatre darken. Strange music begins to fill the air as fog rolls on to the stage. The magician picks up a thin board. An assistant holding an eerie green work light walks on stage. The magician places the board in front of his body. The assistant walks behind the magician and raises the light. He lowers the light behind the magician and begins to push. The green light begins to emerge from the center of the magician's chest. The assistants hand emerges holding the light. He pushes the light to one side passing through the magicians body as if it were made of fog. The magician remains motionless. The assistant pushes the light to other side passing through the magicians spine. The assistant slowly retracts the light letting it pass through the magicians body. The magician lowers the board and reveals that his body is completely intact. The green light fades out.
